Beach Treasures
Hatteras Island has some of the best treasures in the world. From colorful sea glass to so many unique shells, sand dollars, starfish, sea urchins and much more. The ocean is an amazing place that pushes countless, distinctive beach treasures. The picture featured is just a few of the precious gems found along the Atlantic Ocean. Each shell that you find along the beach has its own character, shape and color. Beachcombing the island for precious beach gems is a very relaxing and calming hobby for many. One of the best times to go on the beach looking for shells and beautiful things from the ocean is after a storm, hurricane or nor’easter because usually the ocean has stirred up everything in the Atlantic and pushed it back up on the beach!
  • Scotch Bonnet~ also known in scientific terms as “Semicassis granulate”; which is a species of sea snail. You can find scotch bonnets in a variety of different colors, such as: yellow, orange or brown with very unique patterns and textures.
  • Olive Shell~ the correct name is: Olive Snail and the scientific term is known as “Olividae”. They are predatory sea snails; their shells are very smooth and shiny. They have an oval shape and are oblong.
  • Sea Glass~ is weathered glass that has been tossed around in salt water. The weathering makes it produce a natural “frost” look. You can find almost any color of sea glass but, the most common colors are: green, clear and brown.
